Aldeia medieval, erguida no topo de uma colina isolada, a 820 metros de altitude, oferece uma esplêndida vista sobre os campos e serras em redor. Esta antiga vila fortificada, totalmente recuperada no âmbito do Programa de Recuperação de Aldeias Históricas, guarda vestígios de ocupação humana que remontam ao Paleolítico. Ainda que a sede do município tenha passado para Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a povoação continua a apresentar sobejos motivos de interesse, tais como a igreja matriz, fundada pelos frades hospitalários em 1192 e dedicada a Nossa Senhora do Rocamador; a cisterna, servida por duas portas, uma gótica e outra mourisca; o pelourinho e o relógio instalado sobre um antigo torreão. Já as ruínas do castelo revelam a raiva da população quando, no final do reinado de Filipe II, incendiou o antigo palácio de Cristóvão de Moura, um dos defensores da legitimidade espanhola por terras lusas.
